Kirk Creek Campground offers incredible views of the ocean, but not much privacy.
Kirk Creek Campground is located right off the CA 1 highway right on a cliff that sits 100 ft above the ocean. The views are incredible, and you can see miles and miles of ocean in either direction. The sunset is gorgeous and you can often catch a glimpse of sea animals, including storks, dolphins, seals, and migrating whales.
The location on the one is great in that there are many parks nearby, and Big Sur is only half an hour away. Lime Kiln park for instance is right near by (although it is currently closed due to the fires). In Lime Kiln, the water is this incredible blue green due to the mineral deposits. There are other parks within one hour that offer great coastal hikes, with tide pools and awesome rock formations and cliffs. In the tide pools, you can view starfish, shells, crabs, and beautiful rocks. I highly reccomend Paso Lobos State Park.
The weather is amazing, even in winter. The sun shines directly down on the camp site, so it is only cold when the sound goes down. The flip side of this is that there are not many trees, so the site can almost get too hot. Also, since there aren't many trees, there is not alot of privacy. Your neighbors up hill can see you, and you can see your neighbors down hill. So it can be a little akward. I would highly reccomend bringing some sort of canopy or umbrella for shade.
Also, due to the recent fires, there aren't many trails open within walking distance, and the hill side is burnt. That diminishes the scenery a bit, although there are still some big redwoods. Also, the noise from the freeway is noticable since it is literally right off the freeway.
The facilities are alright, although the men's bathroom had a strong odor. Make sure to bring your own firewood because there is little foraging. Although we didn't have the best time, if you are a ocean lover, this could be the camp site for you, as the ocean view is spectacular.
