A great place to just get away in Big Sur.

This park was amazing. Hiking galore! And when you are tuckered out from hiking you can grab your towel and lay out by the beach.

I just finished a five day stay at Dimond O Campground. I had a very enjoyable time. The camp host is full of information and is very willing to share that information. He also seemed very active to ensure that everybody has a good time.

The sites seem ample enough for four adults to not feel too cramped. Two cars per camp is all that is allowed and fitting two cars in the designated space can sometimes be a bit of a challenge.

Some of the things that I wondered on my way to the campground was:

Am I limited to only using the "grill"?
The grill is actually a fire pit. Build a campfire inside the designated ring and you're good to go. No need to bring a propane stove or charcoal briquettes.

Are fire permits required?
As you head down Hwy 120 and Evergreen Rd, you'll see signs that say that you have to get a fire permit. The camp host told me that a fire permit was not required on the campground. Awesome.

How big are the bear boxes?
I was nervous that my cooler wouldn't fit into the designated bear boxes. The site had two bear boxes and each bear box was large enough to hold a 100qt Coleman cooler. The bear boxes are pretty well beat up. The camp host told me that Dimond O pretty much gets the used bear boxes from other federal campgrounds. One good thing is that I did not encounter a bear in the camp the entire time I was there. (I ran into three in Yosemite).

What's the best store to restock food supplies?
The camp host told me that the best place to get groceries (without succumbing to highway robbery) is the Mar-Val market in Groveland.


Overall, I had an excellent time and I would definitely stay here again.

Great ambiance, great food, would defiantly go back.

Even though we didn't have the best main course, I would definately go back.
