Quaint restaurant with great desserts.
Big Sur Roadhouse offers a uique menu. It is fusion between "California Fresh" cuisine and "Latin American" cuisine. The California Fresh part of it is quite good. We ate a salad where the waiter promised it would be the best sald we had ever tested. Quite honestly it lived up to this expectation. He said people come near and far to eat this salad, and I can understand why. It was DELICIOUS and very unique. It was made from Spinach, blue cheese, toasted nuts, and dried beet slices. It was an incredible combination and I would definately go back there just for that salad.
But other areas sort of fell flat. We also ordered chicken enchiladas, which put Mexican food to shame. The whole dish was soggy and much too acidic. It was covered in some sort of sour green sauce, and worst of all, the cheese was of low quality, and there was plenty of it. For California, where you can get some of the best Mexican food outside of Mexico, we were not impressed.
Yet we were very impressed with the desserts. They served ice cream that was incredible (fresh and very creamy). We ordered a sundae with caramel and another dessert which has roots in New Mexico. It was made with some sort of sweet sauce and fried dough. It was awesome. And even its simpler counterpart, vanilla ice cream with caramel, was awesome too. The caramel tasted like it was homemade, nutty and delicious and the vanilla ice cream was to die for.
Although the main dish wasn't that great, the dessert and salad was so good, that I would definatley go back. A unique refreshing selection for Big Sur, and they served regional beer (always a plus). And the service was solid.
